Who is this workshop for?
All our workshops are open to kinship carers living in England and Wales. A kinship carer is someone who has stepped in to raise a child or children when their parents can’t.
If you live in Wales, not all the information in this workshop will be relevant, but it might still be helpful.
This workshop might be helpful for kinship carers looking for support for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
What will be covered?
The workshop will include information about:
- the processes for accessing support available for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)
- the Education, Health and Care plan (EHCP) process and how this links to support
- the Virtual School and how it relates to children and young people with SEND
After the workshop you will receive a handout and the presentation slides via email along with a feedback survey.
Please note that Council for Disabled Children deliver this workshop. They have worked with Kinship and kinship carers to develop this workshop, and are contracted for this workshop.
Kinship is not responsible for other content produced outside of these workshops.
Important – how to join the workshop
All workshops will be held online using a free platform called Zoom. Please note that numbers are limited for each session to around 12-15 people to allow you to meet other kinship carers.
You can access Zoom through a desktop computer, laptop, tablet or even your phone. You may need to download Zoom before you join, please factor in time to do that. The best experience will be through a computer or laptop. Watch a video on how to join a Zoom meeting.
Please make sure you:
- sign in to Zoom before joining the workshop
- click on the Zoom link in the email we sent you
- make sure you join on time – late joiners might not be admitted after 15 minutes
- have a pen / pencil and paper to make notes
About Vicky:
Vicky is a qualified and practising social worker with almost 25 years’ experience in a Barnardo’s specialist fostering and short break service for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). As a Parent Carer to a daughter with Down syndrome, she has experienced some of the highs and challenges that many families experience when bringing up a child with additional needs. Vicky is passionate about seeing parents and carers as experts of their own situation. Her guiding principle is to support families to achieve more ordinary lives through timely support and partnership models. As an Associate for the Council for Disabled Children, Vicky brings both her personal and professional perspectives to the workshop.

"This was a well presented workshop which will help anyone with a SEN child to wade through the bureaucracy surrounding a diagnosis. A good clearly written explanation of what an EHCP encompasses."
