Better communication and the teenage years workshop

Who is this workshop for?
This workshop is for kinship carers living in England and Wales. A kinship carer is someone who has stepped in to raise a child or children when their parents can’t.
Are you caring for teenagers, pre-teenagers or young adults? This workshop will help you harness the power of effective communication. Find out what the science says about how your actions can improve your relationship.
You will learn how to keep a household stable, especially through challenging times. Safety and vigilance against harmful behaviours is also covered.
What will be covered?
The workshop will include information about:
- communication, particularly non-verbal communication
- how to be a strong anchor and have a stabilising role
- being vigilant to any harmful behaviours and what to do
- an introduction to managing the teenage years
After the workshop you will receive a handout and the presentation slides via email along with a feedback survey.
Please note that Gill (the workshop facilitator) has worked with Kinship and kinship carers to develop this workshop. Gill is contracted for this workshop and another on ‘How to improve challenging behaviour’.
Kinship is not responsible for other content produced outside of these workshops.
Important – how to join the workshop
All workshops will be held online using a free platform called Zoom. Please note that numbers are limited for each session to around 12-15 people to allow you to meet other kinship carers.
You can access Zoom through a desktop computer, laptop, tablet or even your phone. You may need to download Zoom before you join, please factor in time to do that. The best experience will be through a computer or laptop. Watch a video on how to join a Zoom meeting.
Please make sure you:
- sign in to Zoom before joining the workshop
- click on the Zoom link in the email we sent you
- make sure you join on time – late joiners might not be admitted after 15 minutes
- have a pen / pencil and paper to make notes
About Gill:
Gill started Stressed Parent in 2014 having become a stressed parent herself when she became a single mum through adoption in 2011 to a highly traumatised and challenging three-year old boy. She has walked in the shoes of many parents who are on the receiving end of defiance, aggression, manipulation and other controlling behaviours, providing her with a unique empathy and understanding. It was an intervention called Non-Violent Resistance (NVR) that turned things around. Gill became so convinced in the method that she trained in it professionally.
"This was excellent. It made me think about my approach to my teenager. I definitely do talk too much and I learned less is definitely more."
