Who is this workshop for?
This workshop is for kinship carers living in England and Wales. A kinship carer is someone who has stepped in to raise a child or children when their parents can’t.
In this workshop you will learn how to tackle behaviour you find challenging. Find out how to discipline with true meaning by teaching rather than punishing.
You will get some top tips on how to respond and stay calm. You can begin working towards the 5 Rs – relationship, rhythm, rules, ritual and routine.
Carers of kinship children of any age may find it helpful.
What will be covered?
The workshop will include information about:
- how you can develop your influence with your kinship child by developing your relationship
- how to discipline with the true meaning being to teach rather than punish
- how to stay calm to respond appropriately, instead of reacting in difficult situations
- the 5 R’s – relationship, rhythm, rules, ritual and routine
After the workshop you will receive a handout and the presentation slides via email along with a feedback survey.
Please note that Gill (the workshop facilitator) has worked with Kinship and kinship carers to develop this workshop. Gill is contracted for this workshop and another on ‘Better communication and the teenage years’.

Important – how to join the workshop
All workshops will be held online using a free platform called Zoom. Please note that numbers are limited for each session to around 12-15 people to allow you to meet other kinship carers.
You can access Zoom through a desktop computer, laptop, tablet or even your phone. You may need to download Zoom before you join, please factor in time to do that. The best experience will be through a computer or laptop. Watch a video on how to join a Zoom meeting.
Please make sure you:
- sign in to Zoom before joining the workshop
- click on the Zoom link in the email we sent you
- make sure you join on time – late joiners might not be admitted after 15 minutes
- have a pen / pencil and paper to make notes
About Gill:
Gill started Stressed Parent in 2014 having become a stressed parent herself when she became a single mum through adoption in 2011 to a highly traumatised and challenging three-year old boy. She has walked in the shoes of many parents who are on the receiving end of defiance, aggression, manipulation and other controlling behaviours, providing her with a unique empathy and understanding. It was an intervention called Non-Violent Resistance (NVR) that turned things around. Gill became so convinced in the method that she trained in it professionally.
